In his criminal work Edward is instructed alone and as a leading Junior, both to prosecute and defend in cases across a broad spectrum of specialist and general crime from white collar fraud, to murder, rape and child abuse, drug trafficking offences and serious offences of violence.



Edward is a grade 3 prosecutor on the list of external Advocates for the CPS London Area and is on the Rape List.



He is a specialist in cases involving vulnerable witnesses, especially children and adults in sexual cases.



Edward is a robust and passionate advocate, who is a staunch up holder of the responsibilities and duties placed upon the independent bar. He also sits as an immigration Judge and has specialised in deportation cases that have involved a variety of sensitive allegations involving foreign criminals.

Cases

Fraud & Regulatory



R v Olto Vermeulan – Defence – Confiscation hearing lasting several months involving World Wide assets of a South African National. Complex issues and negotiations involved. The judge indicated it as a “Fiendishly complex case”



R v Harris – Defence - Extensive company tax and Vat fraud involving the motor trade in the West Midlands.



R v Robinson – Defence – High profile fraud on legal aid which attracted a great deal of media publicity. Proceedings lasted over 3 years.



R v Hilali – Defence – Complex and high profile fraud involving the Kurdistan appeal fund. Trail lasted 5 weeks.



General Crime



R v Daniel White -Defending at Harrow Crown Court- Armed robbery involving attack on elderly couple at jewelers. Described by the judge as a "callous and cowardly attack".



R v David Pearce –Isleworth CC- Led for the Prosecution- Father David Pearce, ex-head of an independent Catholic School pleaded guilty to 10 indecent assaults and one sexual assault on five boys, four of whom were aged under 16 at the time. High profile case in which the defendant was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment.



R v James Murphy- Attempted Murder by strangulation. Defendant convicted and sentenced at CCC. Prosecuted case against Leading London QC.



R v Belcher – Defence – Rape. Ten day trial involving local radio D.J. Acquitted. Trial Judge commended Edward for his closing speech.



R v Kalu – Led for the prosecution – Allegations of rape and cruelty of four children. Four week trial. Defendant convicted. Extensive Social Services involvement.



R v Hersi – Prosecution – Stranger rape and abduction of a Finnish au pair. Convicted -  Seven years imprisonment.



R v Singh & Singh – Prosecution – High Profile case involving marital rape and violence within the Sikh community. Notable for the issue of physiological harm as a consequence of the allegations.



R v Pile – Defence – Rape and child cruelty involving children and grand children of the defendant. Four week trial.



R v Archer – Prosecution – Rape and threats to kill. Traumatized complainant who was hospitalised during course of trial. Defendant convicted eleven years imprisonment.



R v Operation Terke – Led CPS HCA for prosecution. Ten Defendant conspiracy to rob cash in transit. Trial length six weeks. One of the first successful prosecution appeals under section 58 of CJA 2003 following “half time” ruling by original trial judge.



R v Edwards – Defence – Significant Conspiracy to supply class A drugs. Trial Length eight weeks at Cardiff Crown Court and is one of the biggest cases in the history of the South Wales Police.



Operation Halverdore – Prosecution – Conspiracy to supply Class A drugs in South London. Seven Defendants which involved an extensive under cover police operation.



R v Leroy Francis – Prosecution – rape of 13 year old child by painter and decorator. Croydon crown court. Convicted. 8 years imprisonment

Interests

Academic Interests



Edward has taught Public Law, Constitutional and Criminal law at a variety of universities, most recently Kings College, London. He has advised the Law Commission and Home Office in relation to public order and sexual offences.



General Interests



Rugby - all matters Irish, football, cricket, history and politics, all types of music, art and architecture and being in london and in the country.
